ast May, a group of 35 florists enjoyed an incredible week on Italy’s Amalfi Coast. They attended the 5-day course called "La Bella Vita", or "the good life". This description was spot on, as they were taught by three top-tier designers. Learning the craft from Max van de Sluis, Vincenzo Antonuccio, and Per Benjamin for a week in such a stunning location was a dream come true for these florists.

The Perfect Setting

The location was carefully chosen. The course focused on bridal work, which is of course best practiced in an inspiring and romantic setting. Participant Katharina Albrechtsen from Denmark shared her thoughts: “It was a fantastic experience to work in such an idyllic setting on the Amalfi Coast alongside so many talented florists. It was the perfect environment for a wedding event.”

Flowers in the Open Air

The course was meticulously organised, ensuring participants could learn as much as possible while also enjoying their surroundings. They mainly worked outdoors, which provided a valuable lesson in how to keep flowers fresh in the sun using the right materials, such as water tubes. Max explained, “We wanted to teach them not only the aesthetic aspects of the craft but also how to maximise the lifespan of flowers through careful preparation.”

Task 1: The Terrace Fence

The course began with a theoretical session where various techniques were explained through sketches and mood boards. Then it was time for hands-on work! The first task was to create a terrace fence, balancing the need to enclose a space while maintaining enough transparency to enjoy the beautiful view. The result was fantastic!

Task 2: The Beach Tent

Our personal favourite was the second task: the beach tent. For this idyllic and intimate wedding setting, the group split in two. One half worked on the tent structure, which was filled with greenery and the very durable Limonium. The other half of the group created a massive floral wreath around the tent, using flowers such as Solidago, Astilbe, and Hypericum.

Task 3: The Terrace Tables

The final outdoor task focused on understanding the atmosphere of a space. Participants had to decorate the terrace tables, considering which flowers and techniques would fit best. They received extensive coaching, and the results were stunning! Beautiful table arrangements and hanging floral designs adorned the space. The décor included Gloriosa, Limonium, Sanguisorba, and cheerful accents of lemons! That evening, they enjoyed a candlelit dinner amidst their own creations, complete with Italian music in the background. Mission accomplished!

Task 4: Freestyle Bridal Bouquets

The last part was a workshop on bridal bouquets. The trio presented various techniques and examples of bouquets, then let the participants create their own. They had complete freedom in choosing flowers and techniques; it was a freestyle assignment. Each florist's unique style shone through. Participant Jenny Thomasson from the USA remarked, “I value education highly. Learning new skills and connecting with florists from around the world fuels my creative and human soul. It was truly La Bella Vita!”

Looking Forward to More!

The course was a great success. Last year, the same trio held a multi-day course in Italy’s Madonna di Campiglio ski area. You can read about that experience here. There are no new courses planned yet, but such an inspiring week definitely leaves us wanting more. Be sure to follow the trio’s Instagram pages: @maxvandesluis, @perbenjamin @antonucciovincenzo.
